The Lady Panthers are in prime position to put a notch in the win column as they prepare for their home-opening dual match against Jacksonville College, set for 1 p.m. Friday at the tennis courts.

The Prairie View A&M women's tennis team has one dual match in the books and competed well with a ranked Arkansas squad at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club in Houston on Jan. 19. Prairie View A&M lost 7-0 to the No. 36 team in the country but saw promising rallies by its No. 1, 3 and 6 singles players.  No. 1 Brittany Harrell took a 6-3, 6-2 loss by the hands of Claudine Paulson. At the No. 3 spot, Christine Ngo Gwodog fell 6-3, 6-3 and in the final match Capra Fellows lost to Arkansas' Kristen Mee 6-3, 6-1.

“We were right there in most of the matches,” Prairie View A&M coach John Cochran said. “Christine lost 6-3, 6-3. Brittany lost 6-3, 6-2. They were both in then physically and mentally went to the side. We fought hard. We just need to get into better conditioning shape.”

Jacksonville College will pose a threat to the Lady Panthers, but Cochran said his team should be confident in its abilities and strive for a convincing win in its home-opener.

“They are a good team. They are a ranked team. But we really need to enact our will against them and put into fruition what we have been working on in practice. We're looking for good things. We want this to be a good start. We should do well, but you never know.”
