Lady Panthers Return To The Win Column In Non-Conference Finale

Former Junior College Teammates Lead The Way In Win Over Texas Wesleyan

BOX SCORE

HOUSTON, Texas - The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers snapped their two-game losing streak with a convincing 69-57 win over Texas Wesleyan Wednesday night at the M.O. Campbell Center.

Prairie View A&M guards Kiara Etienne and JaQuandria Williams, who were teammates at Copiah-Lincoln Community College just a season ago, both scored 15 points to tie for the game high and lead the Lady Panthers to their third win of the season.

Williams, in her debut game for Prairie View A&M, was highly efficient from the field. She went 6-for-11 from the floor and was 1-for-1 from downtown. Etienne, who was averaging over 20 points over her last four games, was 7-for-13 from the field and added four rebounds and two assists.

The Lady Panthers ended the first half with a five-point, 39-34 advantage. Etienne scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half. However, Prairie View A&M had to work from behind to come away with the first-half advantage. Texas Wesleyan outscored the Lady Panthers 21-9 through the first eight minutes, using a three-point shot by Audrianna Simpson to take an 11-point lead with 11:48 left in the half.

Etienne capped off a 21-8 Prairie View A&M run with a shot from downtown to give the Lady Panthers a decisive 30-29 lead with 3:41 remaining in the half. After taking the lead, Prairie View would never surrender it. The Lady Panthers outscored Texas Wesleyan 16-6 out of the gates in the second half to take a 55-40 lead that the Lady Rams could not recover from.

The Lady Panthers (3-8) return home on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 to host Southern in their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener at 5:30 p.m. in the William J. Nicks Building.  Next Tuesday's showdown, which will be played on a newly renovated court, is a rematch of last year's 2011 SWAC Tournament Championship in which PV defeated the Jaguars.
